The Chambers Ireland Excellence in Local Government Awards 2010
MAYO SUCCESS AT NATIONAL AWARDS CEREMONY
The Chambers Ireland Excellence in Local Government Awards in partnership with the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government took place in the Burlington Hotel, Dublin on Thursday 28th October, 2010. The Awards were presented by Minister John Gormalley.
These awards highlight the dedication of local authorities and their staff across Ireland to support the ongoing development of the communities that they serve.
Ballina Town Councils winning project: Ireland’s Memory: The Jackie Clarke Collection won the overall prize in the Supporting Tourism Category.
The Jackie Clarke Collection – a private Irish historical collection made up of over 100,000 items spanning 400 years of Irish history was donated by Mrs Anne Clarke fulfilling the wishes of her late husband Jackie Clarke. The aim of the project is to develop a cultural tourism project of national and international importance to Ballina Town and surrounding regions. The Clarke Collection will add significantly to the social, cultural and economic profile of Ballina, bringing with it an internationally significant and unique piece of cultural infrastructure.
The award was accepted by the Deputy Mayor of Ballina Town Council, Cllr Peter Clarke who is the youngest son of the late Jackie Clarke along with Town Clerk Carmel Murphy.
Cllr. Clarke outlined that “it was a great boost for Ballina and that he was very proud to receive the award on behalf of Ballina Town Council. He particularly wanted to thank Sandra Cribben, Ballina Chamber who assisted in submitting the application for the award and Sinead McCoole, Manager of the Jackie Clarke Collection, Peter Hynes, County Manager and Paddy Mahon, Director of Services for their dedication, support and commitment to this unique project which will benefit many generations to come”.
