'Recycle your Litter and Make Your Tree Glitter'
In November 2007, Ballina Town Council launched it’s Litter Awareness Campaign between the 10 Primary Schools in the Town and it's Environs – these included Behy N.S., Breaffy N.S., Culleens N.S., Knockanilloo N.S., Scoil Iosa, Scoil na gCeithre Maol, Scoil Padraig, St. Dymphna's, Quay N.S., Rehins N.S.
The Campaign had 3 aspects:
- Presentation by Town Council staff on the negative effects litter has on us individually and as a community. This incorporated the introduction of Ballina Town Council's Litter Wardens who in turn advised the children of the number of litter fines issued and the fine of €150.00 payable under the Litter Pollution Act 1997.
Ballina Town Council arranged a presentation by Marvin the Magician (accompanied by the hugely popular 'Billy the Bird') who taught the children about the concepts of 'Reduce, Reuse, Recycle' in a fun and magical way.
- Launch of a competition entitled 'Recycle your Litter and Make Your Tree Glitter'. Each participating school were invited to make Christmas decorations from recycled materials. At the beginning of December, Ballina Town Council provided each School with an authentic Christmas tree whereon, the decorations were displayed.
Shortly before the end of term, the Town Architect visited each school to judge the competition.
After much deliberation, in a very tightly contested competition, Knocknailloo National School were declared the Winners of Ballina Town Council's Recycle your Litter and Make Your Tree Glitter' Competition 2007. Knockanilloo National School received a Digital DVD Camcorder, with all other participating schools receiving a voucher towards the provision of art supplies. All pupils received some goodies for their Christmas party, which proved to be the biggest treat of all!
