Ballina Town Council's Anti-Litter Awareness Initiative 2008

Ballina Town Council is acutely aware of their responsibility in reducing the instances of litter in Ballina and education of the young people in our community is a key factor. However, it is also important to introduce a fun element to this. It is on foot of this, that Ballina Town Council launched its anti-litter awareness initiative 2008 – A song/rap competition called the “L-Factor”.

Earlier in the year, the Council contacted all the National Schools in the Town & invited them to compose and submit a song that refers to both litter and Ballina town.

The six participating schools in the competition performed their composition at the “L-Factor” Concert which took place on Friday evening – 28th November, 2008 in Ballina Sports & Leisure Centre.

The six schools that participated on the night were:

  1. Culleens N.S. with their song – “Green Team”;
  2. Knockanillo N.S. performed “Green Rap”;
  3. Scoil na gCeithre Maol – who sang “Beal an Atha”;
  4. Scoil Padraig with their song called “Keep Ballina Clean”;
  5. The Quay National School with their song called “Litter Queen”;
  6. Rehins N.S. who performed “Clean Up Ballina”.

The winners were:

  • 1st Place: Rehins National School – who received a prize of €600.00
  • 2nd Place: The Quay National School – who received €400.00
  • 3rd Place: Scoil na gCeithre Maol – who received €200.00

Also, the jewel in the crown was that Midwest Radio called to the winning school, Rehins, to record their song “Clean Up Ballina” and this was aired on the local radio station during the month of December.

As this Initiative was so popular with students, teachers and parents, Ballina Town Council will be applying to the Department of the Environment, Heritage & Local Government again this year to seek a grant to host another “L-Factor” Competition in February, 2010.
